former boss president obama. the former white house chief of staff rahm emanuel is calling for a comprehensive plan to reduce deadly shootings. chicago had more than 500 murders last year. analysts say it's already on track to top that number this year. mayor emanuel was an advisor to clinton back in 1990 when congress passed an assault weapons ban. the national rifle association is predicting a new ban will not get through this congress. stooe brown is in chicago tonight. what did emanuel have to say today? >> he was ordering all investments in guns they need to produce a comprehensive bill like in 1994 that one was authored then by senator joe biden. he hopes vice president biden will put together a package that includes an assault weapons ban a limit on the size of clips that go in for ammo and background checks. he suggests the democrats in the senate pressure the republican led house to act. >> whatever you do start it now whatever you do start in the senate. clear the debt and put the ultimate pressure on the house. put it in many ways as best you can. >> emmanuel kno

-month anniversary of the newtown shootings. today at the white house, president obama held what will be his final press conference of his first term as president. and even though his opening statement was all about the debt ceiling, the first question he got from the press today was about guns. >> the vice president and number of members of my cabinet went through a very thorough process over the last month, meeting with a lot of stakeholders in this, including the nra. listened to proposals from all quarters, and they've presented me now with a list of sensible common sense steps that can be taken to make sure that the kinds of violence we saw at newtown doesn't happen again. i'm going to be meeting with the vice president today. i expect to have a fuller presentation later in the week to give people some specifics about what i think we need to do. my starting point is not to worry about the politics. my starting point is to focus on what makes sense, what works. what should we be doing to make sure that our children are safe. >> the president and his press conference today didn't announce this

: you talked about how obama managed to drive a wedge between red state republicans and blue state republicans. is that what he's trying to do on the debt ceiling debate as well. >> you can the white house adopt a divide and conquer strategy for quite a bit of time. there are 85 house republicans who voted yes on the bill and created the margin it needed to pass. here's the interesting thing of those 85 republicans who voted yes. 70 of them came from blue states. states that voted for barack obama over mitt romney last november. in other words the white house is defending on some of these blue-state republicans. that means if the white house can drive a wedge between the blue state republicans and the red state presence he might be able to get dicey piece of legislation through the house. >> john: it seems to be a strategy. where does the debt ceiling fit into this? it just ensures that we pay the bills that we already spent. why are they talking about the two issues as if they're the same? >> why do they do a lot of things. but the question as that vote approaches in february or m
